About Potala Palace

The Potala Palace stands on Marpo Ri hill above Lhasa, its white and red walls rising in terraces against the sky at an altitude of about 3,700 m. It was the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and is one of the most important religious and historic buildings in Tibet, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

The palace, built from 1645 with later additions, has two main parts: the White Palace, used for living and government, and the Red Palace, used for religious study and prayer. Inside are chapels, gold-covered tombs of earlier Dalai Lamas, murals and sacred objects. Visiting means climbing many steps at high altitude, so allow time to adjust, and the palace holds deep religious meaning for many people, so quiet and respectful behaviour matters.
