About West Lake, Hangzhou

West Lake is the heart of Hangzhou, a calm lake of around 6 to 7 sq km surrounded by hills, temples and gardens, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape in 2011. Long causeways with willow trees cross the water, and small islands and pagodas dot its surface — in the mist it looks like a classical Chinese painting.

The lake has been a favourite of poets, emperors and artists for more than a thousand years. The two long causeways, Su and Bai, cross the water lined with trees, while Leifeng Pagoda, the Broken Bridge and Three Pools Mirroring the Moon are popular stops. Today people come to walk, cycle, boat and drink the local Longjing tea, making it one of the easiest and most relaxing places to visit in eastern China.
