About Terracotta Army

The Terracotta Army is a huge collection of clay soldiers, horses and chariots buried around 210 BCE near the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a united China. They were meant to protect him in the afterlife, and they waited underground for more than two thousand years until local farmers discovered the first figures in 1974.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the figures are displayed in large covered pits: Pit 1 is the biggest and holds long columns of soldiers, Pit 2 shows archers, cavalry and chariots, and Pit 3 is the command post, with a separate hall displaying two bronze chariots. Each soldier has its own face, hairstyle and posture, which makes standing in front of the long rows an unforgettable experience — one of the great archaeological finds of the world.
