The Bund, also known as Waitan, is Shanghai's famous waterfront, a promenade of about 1.5 km along the Huangpu River. On one side stand dozens of grand stone buildings from the early twentieth century, once banks and trading houses. On the other side, across the water, rise the glass towers of Pudong, including the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Tower.
The contrast between old and new is the whole point of the place. By day you can study the architecture, and after dark both banks glow with lights, making it the most popular evening walk in Shanghai and a good way to feel the energy of the city. Historic buildings along the road, now home to restaurants, shops and offices, line wide paths, benches and viewing platforms, with sunset a popular time for photos.
Walking the Bund is free, and it suits families, couples, groups and photographers for a visit of 1 to 3 hours or a full evening. Huangpu River cruises and the Pudong towers charge extra.
Weekends and national holidays bring heavy crowds — the metro is the quickest way to reach the area and avoids road traffic.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi to Shanghai, either direct or with one connection. Check current routes and book early.
Take the airport metro, maglev, taxi or hotel transfer into the city.
