Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands on the edge of Abu Dhabi island, a vast complex of white marble, gold detail and still reflecting pools, built between 1996 and 2007 and opened to the public in December 2007. In the right light it glows silver, turns warm gold at sunset and shifts to soft blue after dark.
Envisioned by the UAE's founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, it was built over eleven years with craftspeople and materials from many countries, and has space for over 40,000 worshippers across 82 domes and four minarets, each over 100 m tall. Inside the main prayer hall are one of the world's largest hand-knotted carpets and seven crystal chandeliers, the biggest about 15 m tall. It is today both a working place of worship and one of the most visited landmarks in the UAE.
A tourist entry fee of Dh10 applies, Dh5 for UAE residents, with free entry for ages 60 and above — guided cultural tours themselves remain free. It suits families, couples, groups, culture lovers and photographers, for a visit of 1.5 to 2 hours.
Timings and prayer-hall access can change on Fridays and during Ramadan, so it's worth checking before you go, and the mosque is especially striking lit up after dark.
