Set on the banks of the Neelum River, Sharda is a small village with a big past. Hills covered in pine and fir rise around it, the river runs close by, and the pace of life is slow and quiet.
The village is best known for its ancient ruins, which are linked to a historic centre of learning and worship in the region. For many visitors, standing among the old stone remains with the river and mountains behind is a quietly moving experience, whether you come for history, photography or simply the atmosphere.
Sharda is also an important stop on the road through Neelum Valley. It is a gateway to Ratti Gali Lake, a good place to rest or stay overnight, and a pleasant halt between Muzaffarabad and Kel.
