About Ateshgah Fire Temple

The Ateshgah Fire Temple stands in the village of Surakhani, on the Absheron Peninsula close to Baku. Its name means House of Fire. For centuries the area was known for natural gas that burned at the surface, and people from far away came to pray here.

The temple in its present form dates to the 17th and 18th centuries and was used by Hindu, Sikh and Zoroastrian pilgrims and traders who travelled the old Silk Road. It is now a museum and a historic reserve, with a pentagonal walled courtyard and a central altar where the flame burned. The courtyard and its small cells give a clear sense of how pilgrims once lived and prayed, making it a place of special interest for travellers from South Asia.
