About Gobustan National Park

Gobustan National Park lies on a dry, rocky plain south-west of Baku, close to the Caspian Sea. Among its boulders and low hills are thousands of rock carvings made by early people over a very long period of time, showing hunters, animals, boats, dancers and symbols and giving a rare picture of life in the region thousands of years ago. UNESCO listed the site in 2007.

A path leads past the best-known carvings, and a museum at the entrance gives background with models, tools and displays. Nearby, the strange mud volcanoes bubble and slowly push out cold grey mud, a short drive away on a rough track, adding a second reason to visit. The landscape is open and dry with few trees, so the sun and wind can be strong, and it is an easy trip from Baku that works well as a half-day outing.
