About Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum stands on the Baku seafront, and you can recognise it from far away. Its curved body is shaped like a rolled carpet, a fitting home for a collection that tells the story of weaving across the country. The museum was founded in 1967 and moved into its current rolled-carpet building in 2014.

Carpet making is one of the oldest crafts of Azerbaijan, and the tradition is recognised by UNESCO. The museum shows thousands of carpets, rugs and textiles from different regions, each with its own patterns, colours and meanings, organised by region and period so visitors can see how designs change between areas such as Quba, Shirvan, Karabakh and Tabriz-style work. The displays explain how wool is dyed, how designs are chosen and why carpets matter in Azerbaijani homes.
