About Heydar Aliyev Center

The Heydar Aliyev Center rises in the middle of Baku like a wave of white stone, with no straight lines and no sharp corners. Designed by Zaha Hadid and her studio, it flows from the ground into walls and roof in one smooth surface, and it looks different from every angle.

The centre opened in May 2012 and is named after Heydar Aliyev, a former president of Azerbaijan. Inside are museum galleries, exhibition halls and a large auditorium built on a concrete and steel frame covered in white panels, with sweeping staircases and large windows that let in plenty of light. Outside is a wide landscaped park with lawns, paths and fountains, and the building is lit in changing colours after dark, making it a symbol of modern Baku.
