About Maiden Tower

The Maiden Tower, known locally as Qiz Qalasi, stands near the shore of the Caspian Sea in the Old City of Baku. It is a round stone tower built in the 12th century, with one side that juts out like a buttress, and it has become one of the main symbols of the city.

No one knows for sure why the tower was built. Some say it was a watchtower, others a temple or an observatory, and many legends have grown around it — the most famous is about a princess who climbed to the top to escape a forced marriage. The tower is part of the UNESCO-listed Walled City of Baku, with walls up to about 5 m thick at the base, a narrow stairway inside, and small exhibitions on each floor covering the history of Baku, old maps, tools and the many theories about the tower's purpose, leading up to a viewing platform over the Old City rooftops, the bay and the modern skyline beyond.
