About Burj Al Arab

The Burj Al Arab is one of the most famous hotels in the world, opened in 1999. Its white, sail-shaped tower stands on a man-made island a short distance from Jumeirah Beach, and it has become a symbol of the city.

Often described as a seven-star hotel, though that is a marketing phrase rather than an official rating, the hotel stands about 280 m from the shore, linked by a private bridge. Its white fabric front looks like a sail, and at night colourful lights play on the surface. Entry is restricted, so most visitors see it from public beaches, the Madinat Jumeirah promenade or by boat, while others book a meal or afternoon tea to see the inside, known for gold decoration, a very tall atrium and ocean views.

Good to Know

Entry is limited to hotel guests and those with a restaurant, tea or spa booking — a dress code applies, with smart clothing usually required. The hotel suits couples, families, groups, photographers and luxury travellers for a visit of 1 to 2 hours, longer with a meal.

Morning light is soft, and sunset gives golden colour to the sail — public beaches, Madinat Jumeirah and nearby promenades all give clear photo views without needing a booking.
