The Dubai Mall is a vast shopping and entertainment centre at the foot of the Burj Khalifa, opened in 2008, with the Dubai Fountain following in 2009. It holds fashion stores, food courts, restaurants, an aquarium, an ice rink, a children's zone and much more, all under one roof, split into sections including a gold souk, a fashion avenue and an indoor waterfall.
Outside, the Dubai Fountain, about 275 m long with jets reaching very high, performs in the lake beside the mall every evening. Jets of water shoot high into the air in time to music, with lights that change colour, and songs ranging from classical Arabic to modern music. Watching the show with the tower rising behind is one of the most famous experiences in the city, and it is free.
Entry is free for the mall and fountain, with the aquarium and some rides charging separately. It suits families, couples, groups, shoppers and photographers, for half a day to a full day.
Good spots along the fountain boardwalk fill up quickly in the evening, so arriving early for fountain views is worthwhile, and the mall is huge — pick a few highlights rather than trying to see everything.
Fly from Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi or other cities to Dubai International Airport. Direct flights take about three hours, and many airlines operate daily.
Take a taxi, the Dubai Metro or a hotel transfer into the city, usually 20 to 40 minutes depending on your hotel.
Take the Dubai Metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station and use the covered walkway, or take a taxi.
Shop, visit the attractions and head out to the boardwalk for the fountain show.
