About Ranikot Fort

Ranikot Fort stretches across the dry hills of the Kirthar foothills, its long stone walls rising and falling with the ridges like a wall in a story. Often described as the largest fort in the world, it is better described as one of the largest fortified sites, with walls measured in tens of kilometres around a wide stretch of open country.

The fort is usually linked to the Talpur Mirs, who strengthened it in the early 19th century as a defence for their rule in Sindh. Some accounts suggest an older site existed here before. Its origins, purpose and exact dates are still debated by historians. Inside the outer walls lie two smaller strongholds, Miri and Shergarh, along with gates, bastions, a small stream and open ground. Parts of the fort have been restored, while other sections remain in ruins.

About the Fort

Spanning a vast enclosure, the fort features a long stone outer wall climbing along the ridgelines, grand entryways like Sann, Amri, Shahpir, and Mohan Gates, and scenic hill views over the Kirthar foothills. Inside, key strongholds include Shergarh and Miri Fort—the well-preserved inner citadel with towers and elevated ramparts—alongside seasonal streams and greenery following the rains. Early morning and late afternoon provide the ideal conditions for exploring, offering cooler air for walking and soft light that highlights the ancient stonework.
