About the Pine Forest Trails

Fairy Meadows was declared a national park in 1995, and its pine forest is one of the best reasons to go on foot. The trails wind through tall pines on the steep slopes below Nanga Parbat, open into green alpine meadows, and give glimpses of the Raikot glacier and the great north face of the mountain through gaps in the trees.

The main route climbs from Tato village up to Fairy Meadows, then continues as a gentler forest walk to Beyal Camp. Short paths around the meadows and cottages make easy evening walks too. You do not need climbing skills, just good shoes, warm clothes and a steady pace at altitude..

Local story

About the Forest

The forest cloaks the slopes between Tato and the meadows, and thins out near Beyal Camp where the trees meet open pasture. The pines give way to alpine grass, wildflowers and rocky glacier valley higher up. Early mornings are cool and quiet, with soft light between the trunks, and late afternoon brings warm tones on the trail. Local herders and porters use the same paths, so expect to share them politely with horses and walkers.

How to Reach Pine Forest Trails

  1. 01

    Tato to Fairy Meadows

The classic approach. A steady climb of about 5 to 5.5 km through forest, usually 2 to 4 hours depending on fitness and altitude. It is steep in places with rapid changes in altitude and weather. Horses and porters are usually available at Tato.

  2. 02

    Fairy Meadows to Beyal Camp

A gentler walk of about 1 to 2 hours, with very little change in altitude. Pine forest opens to meadow with views of Nanga Parbat and the Raikot glacier. The most popular half-day walk.

  3. 03

    Meadow and Cottage Walks

Short, easy paths around Fairy Meadows for sunrise and sunset, good for families and rest days.

  4. 04

Beyal to Nanga Parbat Base Camp (Extension)

For fit trekkers, the forest thins out and the route becomes rocky moraine. Allow a full day. See our Nanga Parbat Base Camp page.
