About Manthoka Waterfall

Manthoka Waterfall, also spelled Manthokha, drops about 180 feet over a rocky cliff in Kharmang Valley. The water is clear and cold, the spray carries far, and green pasture and trees around the falls make a sharp contrast with the dry brown mountains of Baltistan.

The journey is part of the experience. The road follows the Skardu to Kargil route through villages, orchards and river valleys before turning off to the falls. A wooden footbridge crosses the stream near the base, and viewing spots let you get close to the spray.

Manthoka is a good full-day excursion from Skardu, and a pleasant stop for lunch and a picnic. Nearby streams are also known for trout.

Local story

About the Waterfall

The falls descend in a single strong sheet, about 180 ft (55 m) high, with several levels of rock and trees below. A footbridge over the stream, secured with cables, moves a little as you cross. Paths to and above the base are uneven, steep in places and slippery from spray, so expect to get wet. Parking, a restaurant, a small shop and some rental huts or tree houses may be available near the falls, and trout farming is practised in nearby streams.
