About Katpana Cold Desert

Katpana is a strip of pale sand dunes at the edge of Skardu, with the snow-covered Karakoram rising directly behind them. It sits at roughly 2,200 m, which makes it one of the highest deserts in the world. The unusual mix of sand, river, bare hills and white peaks surprises many visitors.

The desert exists because the high mountains block most of the rain, leaving the Skardu valley dry and sandy. Winters are cold, and in snowfall the dunes can turn white. In summer the days are warm, but nights are cool and clear.

Local story

About the Desert

The dunes lie along the riverbank near the Indus, in a wide, flat bowl surrounded by mountains. They stretch for roughly 5 km along the Indus and Shigar river area, a cold desert formed by the rain shadow of the Karakoram. The sand is fine and pale, shaped by the wind into ripples and low ridges. There are few facilities, only open ground, so most visitors come for a walk, photos and the view.

The best time is early morning or late afternoon, when long shadows show the shape of the dunes and the peaks pick up warm colours. On clear nights the sky is very bright.
