About Satpara Lake

Satpara Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Gilgit-Baltistan and the main water source for Skardu. It lies just south of the town, in a valley of dry brown mountains, and on a clear day the water turns a deep turquoise against the rocky slopes.

The lake is fed by the Satpara Stream, which brings meltwater from the Deosai Plains above. A dam built downstream has enlarged the lake, and it also supplies water and hydroelectric power to the valley. A small island sits near the middle, adding to the view.

Satpara Lake is also on the road to Deosai National Park, so almost everyone heading to the plains passes it. It makes an easy first or last stop on a Skardu day, and a calm break before or after the long drive.

Local story

About the Lake

The lake sits at around 2,636 m and covers roughly 2.5 sq km, around 3.5 km long and 1.4 km wide, with a small island near the middle. The dam has raised the water level and changed some of the old shoreline, and parts of the lake near the dam are controlled by security staff. The best views are from the road and from viewpoints above the water. Mornings are calm and clear, while afternoon wind can ripple the surface.
