About Sarfaranga Cold Desert

Sarfaranga Cold Desert is a stretch of pale sand dunes in the Skardu area of Baltistan, surrounded by snow-covered peaks, rocky slopes and the Indus River. It is one of the highest cold deserts in the world, so the scene is unusual: golden sand underfoot, cold air, and white mountains in every direction.

The dunes are shaped by strong valley winds that carry fine sand from the riverbed. The ridges change after every windy day, which makes each visit a little different. Mornings and evenings are the best times, when the light turns the sand gold and the mountains glow.

Local story

About the Cold Desert

The desert is a mix of open dunes and flat sandy ground beside the river, with scrub and a few trees at the edges. The sand is soft and fine, so walking uphill is tiring, and the wind can pick up in the afternoon. Light, windproof clothing and sunglasses help. Local operators usually offer jeep rides over the dunes and, in season, camel rides. Parking, small stalls and tea spots may be open near the entrance, with limited shade and toilets.

The desert is a natural area used by local people, so keep to existing tracks, avoid littering and do not drive private vehicles onto the dunes unless allowed.

How to Reach Sarfaranga Cold Desert

  1. 01

    Islamabad to Skardu

Fly from Islamabad to Skardu (about 1 hour, weather permitting) or drive via the Karakoram Highway to Jaglot, then the Skardu road. The drive takes more than a full day.

  2. 02

    Skardu to Sarfaranga

Head out of Skardu city on the road towards Shigar. The desert lies a short drive from town, usually 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions.

  3. 03

    Turn off to the Dunes

Follow the side track to the sandy area. A normal car can reach the parking area, but the sand itself is best crossed on foot or by jeep.

  4. 04

Walk or Ride onto the Dunes

Park near the entrance, then walk up the nearest ridge for the view, or book a local jeep or camel ride.
