About Upper Kachura Lake

Upper Kachura Lake is a natural alpine lake fed by glacier meltwater, set among steep mountains and tall trees. It lies above the better-known Lower Kachura (Shangrila) Lake and is far quieter. The water is clear and deep, and on a calm morning the mountains reflect almost perfectly.

Unlike Lower Kachura, the upper lake has stayed largely undeveloped. There are no big hotels on its shores, only a small trail, a few local huts and open ground by the water. That is exactly why many visitors prefer it: it feels wild, still and uncrowded.

If you are already visiting Shangrila Resort, a short walk up to Upper Kachura is one of the best additions to your day in Skardu.

Local story

About the Lake

Also known as Foroq Tso (Foroq Cho), the lake sits at roughly 2,500 m in a bowl of rock and forest. It is fed by glacier meltwater and is known for its clear water and depth of around 70 m (230 ft). The shoreline is mostly natural, with open spots to sit and a rough path around parts of the lake. Local people use the area for grazing and farming in summer. Nearby, the Choq Valley and Skam Cho (the dried lake) are also part of the Kachura area.
