About Balakot

Balakot is a lively town on the banks of the Kunhar River and the official gateway to Kaghan Valley. Almost every traveler heading to Naran, Lake Saif-ul-Malook and Babusar Top passes through its bazaar, and the town is where the road begins to climb into pine forest and cooler air.

Most visitors use Balakot as a practical stop rather than a full destination. It is the best place to eat a proper meal, fill the fuel tank, withdraw cash, buy medicines and book a jeep or vehicle for the upper valley. The Kunhar River runs beside the town, with riverside restaurants and views of the green hills beyond.

Local story

About the Town

Balakot sits beside the Kunhar River at the foot of the Kaghan road, with hills rising on either side as the route climbs north towards pine forest and cooler air. The town has a history of earthquake recovery and rebuilding, and today it functions as the main supply point before the valley narrows beyond it.

Balakot is warmer than Kaghan and Naran, so carry extra layers for the upper valley. Heavy rain can cause landslides on the road.
