About Mingora

Mingora is the largest city in Swat and the natural starting point for any trip to the valley. Set on the banks of the Swat River, it is a busy mix of bazaars, restaurants, hotels and transport stands, and almost every route to Madyan, Bahrain, Kalam and Malam Jabba passes through it.

The city also has a deep history. The Swat region was once a major center of Buddhism, and the hills around Mingora hold ruins, stupas and carvings from that era. Many travelers use Mingora as a first night stop, a place to rest, stock up on supplies, exchange cash and enjoy a first taste of Swati food.

  2. Withdraw cash here

ATMs are limited in Madyan, Bahrain and Kalam.

  3. Stock up on essentials

Buy medicines, snacks and charging gear before heading north.

  4. Dress modestly

Local culture is conservative, and light, comfortable clothing is best. Mingora is warmer than Madyan, Bahrain and Kalam, so carry extra layers for the upper valley.
