About the Panjkora River

The Panjkora River is the lifeline of Kumrat Valley. Fed by snowmelt and mountain streams, it runs cold and clear through deodar forests, rocky banks and green meadows, and its steady sound follows you through the whole valley.

Most travelers meet the river on the road from Thal into Kumrat, where it flows right beside the track. Wide, flat riverbanks make natural campsites, and many camps are set just meters from the water. There are no long treks needed here. The experience is simple: sit by the river, enjoy the forest, eat fresh food and watch the sky fill with stars.

The Panjkora River is popular with families, campers and photographers, and many travelers describe a riverside evening as the most memorable part of their Kumrat trip.

Travel Tips for Panjkora River

A few useful things to know before you go there.

  1. Stay away from the edge

The current is fast and the water is very cold. Swimming is not recommended.

  2. Camp on safe ground

Choose a spot well above the waterline and follow your camp host’s advice. River levels can rise quickly after heavy rain or fast snowmelt.

  3. Dress in layers

Carry a warm jacket, hat and gloves. Nights by the river are cold even in summer.

  4. Supervise children closely

Keep them away from the water, especially at night.

  5. Carry a power bank and torch

Electricity can be limited at riverside camps.

  6. Bring cash

ATMs are limited in Dir and not available in Kumrat.

  7. Expect no network

Tell family your plan before you go.

  8. Check the weather and road conditions

Rain and landslides can delay travel on the valley road.

  9. Keep valuables dry

Mist and spray can damage electronics.

  10. Leave no trace

Carry your rubbish back with you and keep the river clean.
