About Mall Road

Mall Road is the heart of Murree, a lively, tree-lined promenade where visitors walk, shop, eat and watch the clouds roll over the hills. Lined with bakeries, cafés, souvenir shops, hotels and old colonial-style buildings, it has been the main social centre of the hill station since the British era.

The road grew up as the main promenade of a summer retreat, and its character has survived changes over time. Even today, an evening stroll here is the classic Murree experience, with warm lights, fresh mountain air, hot corn on the cob, steaming chai and views across the pine-covered slopes.

Local story

What's on Mall Road

  • GPO Chowk: The central meeting point and the busiest part of the promenade, with the old post office and surrounding shops.

  • Kashmir Point: A viewpoint at one end of the promenade, looking across the layered hills toward Azad Kashmir.

  • Cafés and bakeries: Places for coffee, tea, pastries, pizza and local snacks, many with seating that overlooks the valley.

  • Souvenir and handicraft shops: Shawls, woollens, walnut wood items, Kashmiri crafts, jewellery and small gifts.

  • Lintott Park and historic buildings: A small public park with seating and views, plus colonial-era buildings and a church along the Mall that add to its old-world feel.

  • Street food stalls: Roasted corn, peanuts, pakoras, chana chaat, tea and seasonal snacks.

  • Evening lights: The lit-up shops and hotels make the road especially lively after dark.

Most shops are open from late morning to late evening, later in peak season. Late afternoon brings soft light and cool air, and early evening is when the promenade is busiest. Mornings are quieter and better for a calm walk.

How to Reach Mall Road

  1. 01

    Reach Islamabad or Rawalpindi

Islamabad International Airport, Rawalpindi Railway Station and the motorway network connect the twin cities with the rest of the country.

  2. 02

    Drive to Murree

Park in the designated areas or use a taxi, as space near the promenade is limited. Walk to GPO Chowk and start your stroll.

  4. 04

Travel Tips for Mall Road

A few useful things to know before you go there.

  1. Start early

Leaving Islamabad in the morning helps you avoid traffic and gives you more time on the Mall.

  2. Check weather and roads

Snow, fog and landslides can close roads, so check updates before you leave.

  3. Carry warm clothes

Evenings are cold even in summer, and winters are very cold.

  4. Wear comfortable shoes

The road is long, sloped and sometimes wet or icy.

  5. Carry chains or use winter-ready vehicles in snow

Do not drive in heavy snow without proper experience and equipment.

  6. Do not travel in severe weather

Follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary trips during heavy snowfall.

  7. Agree prices first

Confirm rates for taxis, horse rides, photo sessions and parking before you start.

  8. Check hotel rates

Prices rise sharply in peak season, so compare options and book early.

  9. Keep valuables safe

The Mall is crowded, so watch your bags and phones.

  10. Carry cash

Some small vendors may not accept cards, and ATMs can have queues.

  11. Keep the area clean

Use dustbins and avoid littering, especially plastic.

  12. Dress modestly

Murree is a family destination, and respectful behaviour is appreciated.

  13. Avoid peak weekends if you dislike crowds

Eid holidays, summer weekends and snowfall days bring very heavy crowds, long traffic delays and higher hotel prices. Weekdays and shoulder seasons are much calmer.
